One Heart Stories: Green Apple Florist Rebuilding After the Tornado

Some businesses are more than just stores. They are legacies, handed down through generations, built with love and hard work, and cherished by their communities. Green Apple Florist is one of those places.

The Green Apple story began in 1978, when the shop first opened as The Green Apple Hobby Shop. Back then, it offered framing, crafting, and gift items. Over the years, it grew and changed, always guided by family. Lacy and Amanda, the current owners, are the third generation to carry the torch. They worked side by side with Lacy’s mother before deciding to rebuild as partners after a devastating fire in 2017.

For the past seven years, Lacy and Amanda have poured their hearts into Green Apple Florist. Their shop became a beautiful space where customers loved to gather, browse, and shop. “Business was great,” they said. “Yes, some days are hard but we always stick together. Our store was a beautiful place that everyone enjoyed coming to visit and shop.”

That changed in 2023, when a tornado tore through their community. The destruction was severe, leaving the Green Apple building in ruins. Even worse, being underinsured meant that rebuilding felt overwhelming.

But what happened next was extraordinary. The community rallied behind them, offering help, encouragement, and support from across the state and even beyond. “The community support has been unbelievable,” Lacy and Amanda shared. “We have met some amazing people along the way.”

Heart on Main Street was honored to play a part in their recovery. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners, Green Apple Florist received a donation in 2023 to help them restock their store once the rebuilding was complete. “We were very excited,” they remembered. “You can’t explain the feeling of gratitude. I hung up the phone and called Amanda immediately to tell her the good news.”

That donation helped bring products and fresh inventory back to Green Apple Florist, ensuring they could reopen with the same spirit and service their community had always loved. Today, the store is rebuilt, open, and once again serving as a place of joy and connection.

Their story is more than one florist’s recovery. It is a reflection of why Heart on Main Street exists. Independent retailers are the heartbeat of Main Streets across the country, and when they are supported, entire communities thrive.

Lacy and Amanda’s advice to others who face disaster is heartfelt: Keep your head up. Be patient. Good things are coming, but it takes time.

Green Apple Florist’s recovery is proof of that truth. What began as tragedy is now a story of resilience, community, and hope. We are honored to have been part of their journey back.
