Rebuilding Hope in Asheville: Our First Independent Rebuild Project

Last week in Asheville, NC, Heart on Main Street brought a vision to life. For the first time ever, our team, donors, and volunteers came together for an Independent Rebuild Project, and the results were nothing short of inspiring.

A Boutique in Need

When Hurricane Helene hit, Dogwood Darlings Children’s Boutique, a beloved independent retailer in Asheville, suffered major damage. Owner Kelly Schill wasn’t sure how the store would recover. But thanks to the generosity of donors and the dedication of 20 volunteers from across the country, Kelly’s boutique now has a fresh start.

As Kelly shared after the project:
“I appreciate everything you have done for me and the store! You guys are so wonderful…still can’t believe you picked me…how did I get so lucky!?!”

What We Accomplished Together

Over the course of three days, our team:

  • Repainted the boutique’s second-floor interior and refreshed the exterior trim

  • Repaired damaged walls and fixtures

  • Re-landscaped the storefront for a welcoming new look

  • Provided $5,000 in financial support to aid recovery

  • Delivered over $15,000 in product donations from vendor partners to restock lost inventory

And our support didn’t stop there. Two other Asheville independent retailers, Diamond Brand Outdoors and Second Gear, each received $5,000 grants to help with their recovery from the storm.

These grants were made possible through the generosity of our community, including The Link Companies’ fundraiser in January, which raised critical dollars to fund recovery efforts like this one.

Powered by Volunteers and Donors

This project wouldn’t have been possible without our community of supporters. Lowe’s and other generous donors supplied the tools and materials needed, while local Asheville businesses provided meals and encouragement to keep the team going. Volunteers gave their time, energy, and heart to make sure the store was ready to reopen.

As our Executive Director, Patrick Keiser, put it:
“We don’t just provide funding. We roll up our sleeves, stand beside retailers, and help them rebuild stronger than before. Asheville showed us the power of community, and we’re excited to bring this model to other towns across the country.”

Looking Ahead

The Asheville rebuild is just the beginning. Our goal is to bring 2–3 Independent Rebuild Projects each year to communities impacted by natural disasters. Every project means more independent retailers standing strong, more volunteers making a difference, and more communities regaining their Main Street spirit.

We’re proud of what happened in Asheville, and we’re even more excited about what’s to come.
