One Heart Stories: Willow Creek & The Christmas Store – Two Shops, One Fresh Start

In the cozy mountain town of Chimney Rock, North Carolina, Main Street is known for its charm, its friendly shopkeepers, and the way local businesses create the heartbeat of the community. Among the most beloved were Willow Creek and The Christmas Store, two small shops that brought color, warmth, and tradition to the visitors who walked through their doors each season.

In September 2024, everything changed. When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, Chimney Rock’s Main Street faced historic flooding. Water rushed through storefronts, ruining displays, flooring, fixtures, and inventory from both Willow Creek and The Christmas Store. Decades of hard work, curated collections, and cherished seasonal items were swept away in hours.

For the owners, the loss was overwhelming. Willow Creek and The Christmas Store weren’t just shops, they were places where families made memories, where tourists found keepsakes, and where the heart of Chimney Rock lived day after day.

When Heart on Main Street learned what had happened, we knew these businesses represented more than merchandise. They represented community identity, history, and hope. Through the generosity of our donors, we provided a $5,000 disaster recovery grant to support immediate repairs and early rebuilding efforts.

But the support didn’t stop there.

Through our Giving Inventory Program, we matched the owners with fellow retailer Beth Lewis from Olde Tyme Marketplace. Beth generously donated product from her store to help Willow Creek and The Christmas Store begin to restock, a powerful example of retailers helping retailers, and the kind of generosity that defines Main Street.

Facing immense loss but surrounded by support, Willow Creek and The Christmas Store made a bold and hopeful decision: they combined their shops into one unified store. Together, they rebuilt a refreshed space that honors their past while creating something new for the future of Chimney Rock’s Main Street.

Today, the newly combined store is open once again. The shelves are full. The lights are warm. And the spirit that makes Chimney Rock special is alive and thriving.

For Heart on Main Street, this story reflects everything we believe in: resilience, collaboration, and the belief that Main Street can rise when we lift one another up.

Because every time one store reopens, an entire community gets a little stronger.

One Day. One Heart. Endless Impact.
