One Heart Stories: Asheville Tea Company – Brewing Resilience in the Mountains
Nestled in the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville Tea Company has built its name on creativity, sustainability, and community. Since 2016, the company has crafted farm-to-teacup blends using locally sourced herbs and botanicals. These come from regional farmers and reflect the flavors and values of the area they proudly call home.
In October 2024, their story changed overnight. Hurricane Helene brought catastrophic flooding to Western North Carolina. The French Broad River rose to record levels, sweeping through Asheville’s River Arts District. In a moment that quickly went viral, Asheville Tea Company’s 6,000-square-foot warehouse was carried away by the floodwaters. Inside were their offices, blending equipment, packaging supplies, and inventory. Everything they had worked years to build was gone.
The loss was devastating. Yet, like the community they serve, Asheville Tea Company chose resilience. With support from partners, loyal customers, and fellow small businesses, they began to rebuild immediately, moving quickly from setback to renewal.
Heart on Main Street joined in those efforts by providing a $3,333 disaster recovery grant. This helped the company stabilize operations, replace essential supplies, and begin restoring production. That support allowed Asheville Tea Company to stay connected to its mission and continue creating its signature blends while navigating recovery challenges.
In the months following the storm, Asheville Tea Company partnered with another small, women-owned tea business in Canada. This partnership helped produce their teas while they worked to reestablish their own facility. The collaboration allowed them to stay in business, maintain relationships with local farms, and keep their products on store shelves and in customers’ hands.
Today, Asheville Tea Company continues to grow stronger. Their line includes more than a dozen signature blends sold throughout Western North Carolina and online. Among these, the seasonal favorites celebrate the region’s agricultural traditions. Throughout their expansion, their commitment to sustainability, compostable packaging, and community partnerships remains at the core of everything they do.
For Heart on Main Street, Asheville Tea Company’s recovery shows what makes small businesses special. Their perseverance and dedication to local sourcing embody Main Street’s strength and what we strive to protect.
